Abstract
Eighty-four strains of Shigella sonnei isolated in Korea from 1977 to 1992 were analyzed for plasmid profile, antimicrobial drug resistance pattern, biotyping, and incompatibility grouping and restriction endonuclease analysis of conjugative R
plasmid.
The most prevalent resistance pattern was chloramphenicol(Cm), tetracycline(Tc), streptomycin(Sm), sulfisoxazole(Su), and trimethoprim (Tp) in both strains(57.1%) and conjugative R plasmids (66.2%). All but one R plasmid resistant to CmTcSmSuTp
belonged
to Inc F¥±group ranged from 77-40.3Mda in molecular size. Thirty-six plasmid profiles were detected in 84 strains harboring 2-8 plasmids. The only two biotypes(a and g) were detected. The most common type was type a(81%) and(?)was associated with
characteristic plasmid profiles. The restriction endonuclease analysis (?) DNA using DNA using EcoR1 showed identical or different fragment pattern among plasmids (?) resistance pattern and molecular size. These results indicate that plasmid
profile (?)
and additional restriction endonuclease analysis of R plasmid DNA are useful as an (?) tool for S. sonnei isolates and the multiple clones were disseminated in Korea (?) last 16 years.
